Names, literally

>> Monday, July 25, 2011

Yes, that is what you get if you come up with names for yourself. Here's why, recently I have been seeing a lot of self-given names that is really dumb or DUMB. Wei Lian would agree with me too because she have heard her share of "wan taufu" names. Seriously, some times, i feel like these people purposely dropped the letters in Scrabble and pick anything that sound like a word.

Having names according to days, months and seasons is still bearable but there is a fine line between a name and being made fun off. This post may or may not offend you people out there. OK, so maybe it can offend people so readers are advise to be careful

Here's a warning sign:

Don't say I didn't warn you!

Apple:

Ever watch Annoying Orange? Ever wonder what happen to Apple?

Winky:

Aww, ye who love to wink get to be called Winky. Be thankful it is not Wanker.

Twinkle:

Look at you, so small and tiny you shiver like the rest of stars up in the sky. Only visible at night and in the crowded space with other Twinkles too. At night eh? Hooker? Nooooo.....

Sunny/Summer:

So bright and hot, you thought you were. Wait until you meet Cloudy and Rainy. That should dampen your spirit.

Gummy:

Alright.. I got nothing for this one... Seriously? Food? Might as well name yourself Burger. And Gummy is giving me weird stares..... Scary..

Candy/Sweetie:

Definitely attract a lot of ants there. Hang out with Sunny or Summer and look at yourself melt. Not that sweet any more.

Candle:

Wow, if I don't know you, I would have guess that you are into S&M. Err, no it's not Science and Machinery.

To tell the truth, I am not sure what is the motive of having weird first names. If that's what it takes to be cool or successful, I'll pass man. If it's to have the most unique name of all, then you'll get it: awkward stares.

Imagine this -

You: What a sunny day.

Sunny: You called me?

You: No, I didn't call you, sweetie.

Sweetie: I didn't know you know me!

Sunny: Who is this woman????

You: No, no, I really don't know her. I was just sweet talking you, gummy bear.

Gummy: Yes? Do I know you?

Sunny: Now you are hitting on another girl???? Good bye!

You: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo~!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it could happen.

P.S. - The author's normal and sensible name was given by his loving parents. So sweet of them. No, not you Sweetie.

#7 I admit, Matt Bomer is hot

>> Saturday, July 23, 2011

Yes, like the title said, I do find him hot. Watch the series called White Collar and understand why. Attracted to him, not sexually but he does has his charms. Before this, you'd remember him as Bryce in Chuck. After his deal with Chuck was over, he got to be the star in his own series. You'll come to know him later as Neal Caffrey.

Yes, the hat is a cliche but it works

So the question here: what makes this show interesting other than the man there? Simple, how do you catch a thief? No no, we are not going into Criminal Minds or call the CSI for help or even examine the Bones. This time, we make the bad guy work for us. Well, not as simple as it sounds but that's the gist of it.

He really does have piercing eyes

Neal Caffrey is an art thief, master of forgery and has a mean silver tongue. Well, now he is a FBI consultant who is tightly monitored with a detector at his leg. Tied down with a federal agent, this series got the formula right. What better way to catch a thief than using another thief?

His other half in solving cases

His partner is quite the opposite as Peter Burke is an authoritative person who like to plan things out. Of course further down into the series, you'll see how Caffrey's antics rub onto him. Married and like a father figure, he really is your nice man in the show.

You have to give Mozzie (Willie Garson) credit for playing his part well too, a comedic relief!

If you are looking for comedy, drama and style; this is the one for you. I can't stop watching this series and thanks to my "sources," I am saying hello to Season 3. The show this time focus on the art of crime and how to deal with it. No examining evidence and stuff like that.

The FBI/con man team is one of the best in the business because of the great chemistry between Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and Peter Burke (Tim DeKay). As a con man, Burke has many reason to doubt his every move but that soon turn to trust. Having a FBI babysitter, Caffrey needs his own space and to pursue on other matters too. Not a relapse of his older life but very close. Just watch the series if you are curious!

Burke's detective skills are great and he is like a Caffrey GPS knowing how he thinks and how he acts. As for the con man, he got suave and he is definitely a charmer. He is no womaniser but a real romantic fellow as you'll learn his obsession with something (hint: a box). He loves getting things down his way at times with better results than following the law. Let's not call Caffrey's methods illegal.... It's in the "grey area."

What you want to look in the series for is an ongoing plot and relationship between co-workers here. Sorry, no lovers quarrel but you will be presented with hot girls too. Hey, sex sells. Watch this series and fall in love with it. I know I did.

Extended review HTC Wildfire S

>> Sunday, July 17, 2011

Already wrote a one page review on the magazine. Here's there rest where I can't put in.

HTC Wildfire S - How fast the hot stuff spread?

Messaging is a challenge

First stuff I have to let it out is the fact that typing on the display can be troublesome. I know that I have a stubby fingers, this phone highlighted that fact and leave me feeling depressed. Translation: Hard to type. The only good thing here is how HTC simplified editing and selecting words. Just use your thumbs and move around the words you want to cut/copy/paste and presto! If you are feeling adventurous (I pick that word because it is), try their voice input. Speak in short sentence and you are good to go. If you talk a lot then the voice input will struggle to separate the words.

Meh, camera

The camera was omitted in the magazine because there is really nothing to talk about it. It is a decent 5-megapixel camera with few options for customisation. The picture looks decent but nothing to yell with affection. And the flash works like any other flash: it's bright.

No shout out for video

Like the camera, the video is omitted too because err.. same reason. Comes in 640 x 480, which means no HD recording. You can zoom in but expect very pixelated pictures. Yes, VERY pixelated as the pixels looks like boxes! The good thing about it is that they have a good frame rate.

Average Joe media

It comes with typical HTC video player that forgo everyone's favourite format: avi. You can play/pause, skip clips, all the usual normal stuff. Music player is the same, play/puse, skip, browse through different categories, normal stuff again. And just for kicks, HTC throws in an FM player. It does what standard FM player does.

Here's a question, what does all three need? Speakers! The sound quality for this smartphone is good but I can't help but to think that it can improve on the bass division. They need more oomph.

Battering battery life

Well, I have problems with the battery life because it cannot last long. Sure, I understand that for a starter phone (in HTC standards) that it should be understandable but it is not enough. Using WiFi to browse through the Web half the day will suck up more than half of Wildfire S' life. Nothing much you can do with the phone with weak battery.

My thoughts?

Well, to get this phone at the RRP of RM1,099 is tad bit too much. It is a well featured phone but push it to the limits and you will find the phone crawling on the floor. Instead of being the horse that brings you around, you have to drag it real hard to show real results.

Throwing in Android 2.3 Gingerbread is a nice gesture. I really do appreciate it. The only problem is to find ways utilising the latest Android OS. So my tips for using this phone is simple: make it light, make it easy and that should keep your relationship with the phone sweet. For the price you pay for this phone, think a little harder.

Top 5 horror mangas worth your time

>> Wednesday, July 6, 2011

WARNING: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

The best horror/ghost mangas I've read are from Japan. From weird to truly horrifying, all of them are actually nice reads. Best part is that they actually made me feel that someone is looking over my shoulder.... Great, there goes my good night sleep and pajamas...

Countdown from 5, 4, 3... You get the point.

Number 5: High School of the Dead

This one is more of a zombie manga but it is nicely plotted. Currently still ongoing and I almost turn into a zombie waiting for the next release. Just so you know that this has some funny moments with 18SX stuffs too. Stop your drooling because it doesn't last long (duh). And sometimes, the evil ones are just humans.

It features a bunch of high school kids (duh again) trapped in the city trying to survive a zombie outbreak. Throughout the manga, you'll be introduced to several characters and most of your favourite ones does go through chapter by chapter. This is where "hope" is always there and it never seem to fade out... Yet. Well, that's what I am betting for.

Number 4: Cradle of Monster

This looked more like a rival manga for High School of the Dead. It is also ongoing with very little chapters. What I really hope is that, this manga is not discontinued. Again, it has the same theme but lack of the comedy, which is great! Hurray for REAL horror with little comedic relief! Now you can cover in fear around the corner. Just know that you are not alone....

Alright, back to the plot. It starts mysteriously where you are shown a girl trap undearwater alone in a wrecked ship. Then the story progress as usual with her meeting up with more survivors. The zombies or more like evil super humans, are smarter than WALK-HUMAN-BITE-CHEW-EAT-WALK routine. They have brains and can even use weapons. Example? How about a guy who can fence? My only problem here is that there are too little "scare" factor. At least chances of survival is low here.

Number 3: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro

Ahh, for those who love Detective Conan, this is the one for you but of course with lots of horror in it. Crime solving has never been gruesome than this one. I find myself tingle with excitement and fear looking at each panel. Don't worry, I stop with the zombie thing. For now... Muahahahhaa... err.. I mean yea..

Anyway, this is a story of a girl who, unluckily, met a demon that loves to eat mysteries. You heard right. This demon will manipulate the girl, turning her into a super detective, and devour solved mysteries just to satisfy his hunger. Best part is the punishment he gives to the killer (victim?) before he taste them. The plot is interesting and very different. And it is COMPLETE! No more waiting and yearning for it. Read all you want folks.

Number 2: Drifting Classroom

Aww.. What can go wrong with primary school kids? They are so cute, innocent and troublemakers. How about leaving them unattended in a desolated place? Nowhere to run and hide from unknown creatures and places? With so little knowledge bestowed upon them, how can they survive? Sometimes the untrained mind can be dangerous and horrific. Hint: Imagination.

I am trying not to spoil the story line here. Really trying but there is nothing much I can say that a lot of kids stuck at an unknown place. On their own. No adults to help them. Alone. Expect no laughs here but only horror. If you are not the type to see children die, give this comic a miss. I really mean it. The series is completed but it might take a little effort to find the manga. Hey, it's from 1972, of course you have to find it yourself. No scanlations people.

*Updated: OK, maybe it is not THAT hard to find any more. Google it.

Number 1: Uzumaki

This is the creepiest manga I have ever read in my life. And the fact is, it is all about shape. Sure, you learn them when you are young but exposed to this manga, you'll have a very bitter childhood. The only keyword here is spiral. Every single thing starts from there and ends with that. Humans, nature and sky. Again, it is complete but will take a lot of effort to find it.

You'll be introduced to mostly a village instead of characters and slowly watch events unfold. Continue reading this twisted manga if you dare but don't expect a happy ending. Or even anything sweet. It is bitter all the way and it will literally "fish" your mind. No vulgarities here but you know what is the other word for "fish.... After reading, don't feel shock if you think you are seeing things. I am not kidding...

#6 Xperia Play extended review

>> Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Yes, for those who follow me (I hope), there are so many things about the Xperia Play that I want to write about but don't have that many pages on the magazine for it. Also, they will "frown" upon what I am going to write if I did do it in the magazine. So I'll do it here instead. Shh.. Tell nobody about it. Use words like "Word on the street (net) is that.." or "Hey, I heard from this Super-Genius-Awesome-Guy said.." Yea, something like that.

Here's a quick extended review about the smartphone.

Proud owner of Xperia Play... only for two to three weeks......

Firstly, this piece of machine is really muscular. Its biceps are tremendous, almost scary at times. Pump with testosterone (can't believe I spelled that word right the first time), I can give a 0.24562% of female population will get this device. How do I come up with that figure? Well, let's just say I didn't use calculator. If you disagree, show your woman the phone SIDEWAYS and see how will she react. The form factor is already unappealing. For guys? Well, I like it. That's one out of 7 billion people's opinion.

Again I stress, which you will read in Mobile World Magazine, that I dislike the material choice by Sony Ericsson. It is a smudge magnet and you will definitely see scratches in the future. Taking out the back cover is almost like peeling an apple's skin. Do it wrong and the glossy plastic might BREAK off easily. Sure, tell us that it is Piano Black. Even if you name it Black Mamba, the material used wouldn't get any better.

As you can see, tonnes of smudges.

The camera here is almost a waste giving us 5 megapixel. Sure, it's the same as iPhone's megapixel but did you know that iPhone was released a year ago? By this year, 8 megapixel is the standard. Even the iPhone 5 is rumoured to have 8-megapixel camera if it is out THIS year. One thing that I can praise about the camera is that it offers customisation. No zoom but yes to customisation. Autofocus, white balance, scene mode and several others are at your control. And Sony is known to produce good camera quality so that's good as well. Too bad it's a different story for the front-facing camera. VGA and grainy.

The video..... It's really a major disappointment. Here's the reason why: you have a phone that can support HD viewing but you cannot record in HD. What's worse is that, the Xperia Play has no HDMI output. I saw how great it is to have Xperia Arc with HDMI output and for a gaming phone not to have it? Tsk tsk tsk Sony. Shame on you. No gaming on the big screen.

No, I am not an Angry Birds fan. But I do love Jumping Now.

Here's one of the User Interface that I have to cut out (sad): the Web browser. I know that it is nothing important but you do have to know that the Xperia Play's browser is like any other Android phones. It supports Adobe Flash (woohoo!) but not as buttery smooth as you think. It buffers sometimes but if you are patient, you will be rewarded. Sorry, no instant win here.

Another surprise here is the speakers. Unlike the PSP Go, this phone has better quality speakers. It's really loud but it won't pierce your ears like how that dude stuck a pin in your earlobe. I really REALLY love this part of the phone. Playing Asphalt 6 with maximum volume is awesome. If only I can own the cars there....

Here's the part you've all been waiting for. The thickest part of the cake. The sweetest part in a drink. The best part in a steak. The.. The.. Okay, I'll shut up and "get on" with it. Gaming experience!

First off, is the game pad. Well, just look below. Seriously, just look at it and you will understand:

Almost the same with PSP minus true analogue stick... Oh, and plus Android menu button (bottom left)

I wouldn't call the L & R, "buttons" but oh well.

Get it? There you go. My only complain (two actually, oopsie) here is that they should have stuck with a true analogue stick and the L & R shoulder buttons are flimsy. Pressing the L & R buttons are like fixing a loose compartment. Satisfaction not guaranteed at all. But you have to give Sony Ericsson credits for porting over PSP buttons. Where else can you find a device with 20 buttons with no alphabets on it? Yeah, I counted ALL the buttons on the device.

Other than that, everything else feels alright. HOWEVER, there seem to be a problem when I played Asphalt 6 with this gaming smartphone. It cannot keep up with the frame rate of this game. That translate to lagging at times. Boo. Thank goodness not all the time. SIM 3 in Xperia Play is cool but it made the button purposeless as you are better off using the touchscreen.

Here's another problem: there are currently too little games for this phone. Especially PS One games. You can only play Crash Bandicoot. So far they are not offering anything else in the Malaysia's market.

And presenting to you, something Sony Ericsson will frown upon: using emulators. You can find it over the Internet but not in the Android Market. If you play games via this route, you struck gold. So many PS originals out there for you. It doesn't stops there because you can even play games from Mega Drive, SNES, Gameboy and N64! Once you set the controls to your liking (game pad all the way!), you will have loads of fun! Shh.. Don't go telling people about it. This will be our secret!

Well, that's it folks. The rest of "the good, the bad and the ugly" for this phone. For my original review on this device, just get the Mobile World Magazine. Or ask me to BORROW you my copy. Hey, I need the magazine for boasting rights, I mean future portfolio.

So will you get one or skip it?

#5 Hackers go haywire!

>> Thursday, June 16, 2011

As every Malaysian and some part of the world know, Anonymous release a statement (more like a jpg) saying that they are ready to hack http://www.malaysia.gov.my.

The video was posted up on YouTube as well with a digitally enhanced voice. Sound more like Stephan Hawkins if you ask me. BUT here is their message:

Greetings, Malaysia,

We have seen the censorship taken by the Malaysian government, blocking sites like The Pirate Bay, and WikiLeaks. Malaysia is one of the world's strictest governments, even blocking out movies, and television shows. These acts of censorship are inexcusable. You are taking away a basic human right. The internet is here for freedom, without fear of government interference. Do not think that no one else notices. Your structured government has done the talking, and we hear loud and clear. Let this be an announcement to all your people. This is a sign, a warning, and an opportunity to listen to ideas above your own. In a way you are being stubborn. But how will this help anyone or your country. We fear that if you make further decisions to take away human freedom. We are obligated to act fast and have no mercy. For rules were meant to be broken. And corruption was meant to be washed away and forgiven. Now we will wash your corruption away so be prepared. Take this as a favor.

We are Anonymous.

We are Legion.

We do not forgive.

We do not forget.

Expect Us.

Well, that's all cool as they do receive a lot of hype and support from our fellow Malaysians. And with that note, I guess even our own Malaysia group of hackers decide to take action. They called themselves Dragon Force Malaysia. Yes, they are our very own metal band. Their musical instrument? Most probably their computer (and maybe Linux?).

For those who want to look everything from their perspective, here.

So did Anonymous manage to hack our Malaysia's portal? I think so because there are a few evidence. And don't forget to visit those few sites to check it out yourself.

You can check out the list of websites down or up here, here and here.

Enjoy the jpg show and click the image to enlarge it. :)

First off is this. I am not sure if the picture above is the real one but since it's written as Anonymous, let's leave it as that. Reasons why I said it is because of the message that they left. You can read it on your own and decide.

Ah, this one is subtle but true to the core. Personal opinion but it was cool to me. Hey, imagine those guys that work in CIDB thought that they are alright but on second look, their eyes almost fall out. Awesome.

All of these are the sites hacked by Dragon Force Malaysia. In no particular order. If you want order and not chaos (sorry I have to say it because it was so tempting) just got to their website. Oh yeah, they do have their own site (blog). They are that brave.

One thing you will notice if you are lucky enough to go the hacked sites are the colourful and animated header they put. All I can say is that they do have taste.

And of course their trademark logo: the dragon.

Last but not least, the H3x4 crew who did not want to miss the action. Their target is UiTM Penang site. Who says Kuala Lumpur will get all the promotion?

Well, all that aside, they are definitely an interesting group. Check them out.

P.S. Who says thepiratebay is blocked? Why don't you try typing in malaysiabay.org and see what comes out. You can thank me later. No joke but it's the real thing. Mirror the site and that's what you get.

P.P.S. The writer is NOT or IN ANY WAY AFFILIATED to Anonymous. Just interest in them and hence just reporting about their activity.

Calv out.
