Top 5 horror mangas worth your time

WARNING: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

The best horror/ghost mangas I've read are from Japan. From weird to truly horrifying, all of them are actually nice reads. Best part is that they actually made me feel that someone is looking over my shoulder.... Great, there goes my good night sleep and pajamas...

Countdown from 5, 4, 3... You get the point.

Number 5: High School of the Dead

This one is more of a zombie manga but it is nicely plotted. Currently still ongoing and I almost turn into a zombie waiting for the next release. Just so you know that this has some funny moments with 18SX stuffs too. Stop your drooling because it doesn't last long (duh). And sometimes, the evil ones are just humans.

It features a bunch of high school kids (duh again) trapped in the city trying to survive a zombie outbreak. Throughout the manga, you'll be introduced to several characters and most of your favourite ones does go through chapter by chapter. This is where "hope" is always there and it never seem to fade out... Yet. Well, that's what I am betting for.

Number 4: Cradle of Monster

This looked more like a rival manga for High School of the Dead. It is also ongoing with very little chapters. What I really hope is that, this manga is not discontinued. Again, it has the same theme but lack of the comedy, which is great! Hurray for REAL horror with little comedic relief! Now you can cover in fear around the corner. Just know that you are not alone....

Alright, back to the plot. It starts mysteriously where you are shown a girl trap undearwater alone in a wrecked ship. Then the story progress as usual with her meeting up with more survivors. The zombies or more like evil super humans, are smarter than WALK-HUMAN-BITE-CHEW-EAT-WALK routine. They have brains and can even use weapons. Example? How about a guy who can fence? My only problem here is that there are too little "scare" factor. At least chances of survival is low here.

Number 3: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro

Ahh, for those who love Detective Conan, this is the one for you but of course with lots of horror in it. Crime solving has never been gruesome than this one. I find myself tingle with excitement and fear looking at each panel. Don't worry, I stop with the zombie thing. For now... Muahahahhaa... err.. I mean yea..

Anyway, this is a story of a girl who, unluckily, met a demon that loves to eat mysteries. You heard right. This demon will manipulate the girl, turning her into a super detective, and devour solved mysteries just to satisfy his hunger. Best part is the punishment he gives to the killer (victim?) before he taste them. The plot is interesting and very different. And it is COMPLETE! No more waiting and yearning for it. Read all you want folks.

Number 2: Drifting Classroom

Aww.. What can go wrong with primary school kids? They are so cute, innocent and troublemakers. How about leaving them unattended in a desolated place? Nowhere to run and hide from unknown creatures and places? With so little knowledge bestowed upon them, how can they survive? Sometimes the untrained mind can be dangerous and horrific. Hint: Imagination.

I am trying not to spoil the story line here. Really trying but there is nothing much I can say that a lot of kids stuck at an unknown place. On their own. No adults to help them. Alone. Expect no laughs here but only horror. If you are not the type to see children die, give this comic a miss. I really mean it. The series is completed but it might take a little effort to find the manga. Hey, it's from 1972, of course you have to find it yourself. No scanlations people.

*Updated: OK, maybe it is not THAT hard to find any more. Google it.

Number 1: Uzumaki

This is the creepiest manga I have ever read in my life. And the fact is, it is all about shape. Sure, you learn them when you are young but exposed to this manga, you'll have a very bitter childhood. The only keyword here is spiral. Every single thing starts from there and ends with that. Humans, nature and sky. Again, it is complete but will take a lot of effort to find it.

You'll be introduced to mostly a village instead of characters and slowly watch events unfold. Continue reading this twisted manga if you dare but don't expect a happy ending. Or even anything sweet. It is bitter all the way and it will literally "fish" your mind. No vulgarities here but you know what is the other word for "fish.... After reading, don't feel shock if you think you are seeing things. I am not kidding...

Calv out.

I read Junji Itou's other works too... Tomie and his short-stories and they're also great!
